Matthew leads tax strategy and structure at the firm. He is a tax attorney with a graduate degree in taxation, admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court, and he spent part of his career as a Special Agent with IRS Criminal Investigation, building the government's files from the other side of the table.
That background is the reason the work looks the way it does. A position designed by someone who has taken positions apart is built differently: the documentation is contemporaneous, the authority is cited at the time rather than reconstructed afterwards, and the assumptions are written down where a reviewer can find them years later.
He also served as an intelligence analyst with the United States Army, where the discipline was separating signal from noise under adversarial conditions and being able to show your work. It is the same discipline a defensible tax position requires.
